Governor Beshear Proclaims October As Energy Awareness Month

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 1, 2015) – In an effort to increase energy awareness and encourage citizens to make a difference by reducing their energy use, Gov. Steve Beshear has proclaimed October as Energy Awareness Month in Kentucky.

“One of the best ways to strengthen our future is through education,” said Gov. Beshear. “During the month of October, I encourage you to take advantage of the many resources provided by our Energy and Environment Cabinet to learn how you can use energy more wisely and more efficiently.”

The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) implements energy programs across all sectors of the economy to raise awareness, educate and promote energy efficiency and renewable energy resources. “Over the past eight years, we have developed programs that are having a significant influence on Kentucky’s energy reliability, affordability and security,” said EEC Secretary Len Peters.

Kentuckians can take a greater role in managing energy use year round, according to Secretary Peters. “Even a simple action such as turning off lights when leaving a room can have a positive impact on saving energy, saving money and protecting the environment.”

To promote public understanding of energy needs and offer no-cost or low-cost ways to reduce the amount of energy we consume, the EEC website features helpful tips and resources to inspire consumers to take proactive steps to save energy. Actions you can take this month include:

Take the ENERGY STAR Pledge, and learn how small steps at home can make a big difference.

  • Find resources for a home energy audit – a great first step to increasing home energy efficiency.
  • Raise your energy IQ by taking a weekly EEC Energy Quiz.
  • Watch videos produced by Kentucky students to learn about their vision of Kentucky’s energy future.
  • Participate in National Bioenergy Day, in Campbellsville, Kentucky on Oct. 21.

“Please join me and the Energy and Environment Cabinet in celebrating Energy Awareness Month during October,” said Gov. Beshear. “Year round, our efforts remain focused on improving the quality of life for all citizens by simultaneously creating efficient, sustainable energy solutions and strategies; by protecting the environment; and by creating a base for strong economic growth.”
