FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 24, 2014) – Kentuckians interested in environmental and energy conservation issues still have an opportunity to register for the 2014 Governor‟s Conference on Energy and the Environment that takes place Oct. 7-8 at the Lexington Convention Center. “This year‟s conference agenda reflects the important issues of today that need to be addressed here in Kentucky and nationally,” said Len Peters, secretary of the state Energy and Environment Cabinet. “Infrastructure, which is essential to the protection of our environment, will be a topic of discussion as communities struggle with how to pay for necessary water and sewer improvements. “Professionals in the areas of brownfield development, urban forestry, and agriculture will share their success stories; and I‟m excited to hear from local leaders who are steering environmental protection and energy conservation initiatives in innovative ways,” added Peters. “Another important discussion – one that will interest everyone who pays electric bills – is a session on proposed federal greenhouse gas regulations. A panel of experts will lead the discussion in a „Q and A‟ format.” Tours This year‟s conference adds two free tours the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 7, beginning at 9 a.m. Attendees can choose between a tour of the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) and Kentucky American Water (KAW). CAER investigates energy technologies to improve the environment. Researchers contribute to technically sound policies related to fossil and renewable energy. Tour participants will learn about coal beneficiation, utilization and conversion process technologies; fuel use; coal combustion by-products; engineered fuels; derivation of high added-value materials and chemicals; and renewable energy such as biofuels and bioenergy, electrochemistry, solar energy and environmental remediation.
