Kentucky state officials say that low level radioactive material has been dumped illegally in an Estill County landfill.
The material that was dumped is a combination of rock and salt water used in fracking operations in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
The naturally occurring radioactive material is supposed to be collected an recycled before going to a landfill, but Kentucky doesn’t allow any radioactive material brought in from out-of-state to begin with.
Officials told landfill operators, trash haulers and waste management workers to look out for similar waste coming from out-of-state.
The landfill where the radioactive waste was buried, Blue Ridge Landfill, is across the street from the Estill County Middle and High School.
